Being vulnerable is a scary thought. A laundry list of “what ifs” and “I can’ts” go through our heads, simultaneously.
The irony in not being vulnerable, is you’re actually more vulnerable-in the traditional sense.
If you’re focused on one aspect or area, naturally, you will have a weak spot. I know, that sounds like a complicated concept. In being weak, you’re being stong. It’s opposite day in motherhood, y’all! [Hey, that kind of rhymed!]
It’s the truth, I dont have a pretty way to say it but you have to get messy to have authentic relationships. The more vulnerable you are, the more authentic you will be and closer your tribe gets.
Think about your best friendships, even if you don’t have a current BFF. It happens, you may be Facebook friends but good night, I didn’t even know she had 2 kids! Those friends, you called your best, were not built on a foundation of half truths or smiles all the time. She told you when you were being a crybaby, drama queen, when you had broccoli in your teeth and has likely seen you at least half-naked. I’m not saying you have to get vulnerable exactly like that in your late 20’s and 30’s. Unless you’re breastfeeding, then it’s totally cool, right? Ok, ok back on topic… being vulnerable has 12 million different meanings. The way I’m vulnerable is completely different from someone else.
Hugging people, makes me vulnerable. Group hugs….how about, No!
It’s not that I think people are gross, or smell funny, I’m just not a hugger. [My children get plenty of cuddles, I am not a monster! ] I like my personal bubble and hugs pop that bad boy, big time. Hand shakes are a universal thing, I can get behind. I have friends where a hug is a day changer. So, I hug those friends. I don’t roll my eyes in disgust or think about not hugging. I hug them like my granny hugs me. I give a squeeze and a shake for good measure. I do it because it’s how said friend feels love.
1 John 4:19, basically says, to hug people because He hugged me first. Alright, not exactly. Anything [Verbs, mostly] that makes you vulnerable you can replace with love from that verse and it works.
For my hugger friends, a hug can release all of her stresses of the morning, day or even month. All because I stepped out of my bubble and climbed into hers.
Being vulnerable is being real, it’s being uncomfortable, it’s being unsure but saying so, it’s being a hot mess and owning it, it’s wearing yoga pants to target and church.
Being vulnerable does not make you weak. It addresses your weak spots and then you can go in and put in reinforcement, to become stronger.
Your challenge is to find what makes you vulnerable, how will being vulnerable in this way, change your life?
Here is your actual scripture to meditate on from the bible, because paraphrasing the bible may be frowned upon by the Almighty.
1 John 4:19 NIV
“We love because he first loved us.”
